UPDATE
Although the x-ray showed 7 puppies, Rosanna actually had 8 puppies. Unfortunately, only 4 puppies
survived. Rosanna did a wonderful job and it was an easy whelping. We have 2 yellow females, 1 black female and 1 black male ... beautiful
puppies, all doing well.
You will notice from some of the pictures that both
black puppies have markings that we call "black & tan" ... a surprise to me! It is caused by a
specific gene and has been observed in Labradors back to the origins of the breed. One reason we don't often see these markings is that both
parents have to carry this gene to produce black and tan puppies. Other than the distinctive markings, they are the same Labradors, genetically
and in phenotype, and are still well-bred Labradors, eligible for AKC registration. Actually, the markings are very pretty and some people love
the black and tans, feel it makes their dog more distinctive.
